QPR Suicide Prevention Training
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer, a suicide prevention training program designed to help individuals recognize the warning signs of suicide and respond effectively. Much like CPR is for physical emergencies, QPR is an intervention that equips participants with the tools to act quickly in potential mental health crises.
Delivery Method
QPR training is available in person or online, making it accessible to a wide audience. The standard training session typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, providing participants with practical tools and guidance in a concise format. It is designed for individuals from all backgrounds and does not require prior mental health experience.
Evidence Base
QPR is grounded in established research on suicide prevention and gatekeeper training. Studies have shown that QPR training increases participants’ knowledge about suicide, improves their confidence in intervening with someone at risk, and enhances their ability to recognize warning signs. Research continues to support its effectiveness in a variety of settings including schools, workplaces, and community organizations.
How QPR Fits In
While QPR is a stand-alone, evidence-based training, it can also complement other mental health education programs. When compared with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), QPR can be a great starting point for someone new to mental health education. It also can serve as a refresher on crisis-related concepts for those who completed MHFA a year or more ago and are looking to reinforce their skills.
